What this quote means is that a promise is one of the most powerful things. It can change many thing. How people look at you. How people think of you. I you say you will do something you better do it. This is because if you don't people can no longer trust you to keep a promise. Sometimes those people are the ones you need to believe in you the most. For example if you tell your teacher that you can't take the test because you feel bad and what to go to the nurse , so you’ll take it the next day. If you don't come back the next day to do it and the teacher was waiting for you all day she won't trust you again. She might not let you do the test and just fail you.  A promise can mean many thing to someone. It can mean that the person has trust. However it can also mean that the person doesn't have trust if they don't keep the promise. Another example can be telling your coach you be at practice at 4:00. If something comes up and can't go you should at least let the coach know you’ll be late or won't be going at all.
