What this quote means is that you need character more that you need intellect. This is because your character defies what you are and what you will be. Without character you can't be anything.
If you have a good character people will like you more. You will also become successful. This is because part of having a good character is trying hard. On the other hand if you don't have character many people may not like you. You may also not get a job. You need to be able to have good character to live a good life.
